Michigan history is preserved in its town names.
Abbay (Ab'y) - Point Ab - baye named for an early French settler. Baraga County
Ahmeek (ah-meek) - "Beaver" - Keweenaw County
Algonquin (Al-gon'kin) - Linguistic family name of Indians east of the Mississippi River. "Beyond the lake."
Allouez (Al'ou-ay) - Named for Father Allouez, a Jesuit missionary. Also a mining community in Keweenaw County.
Au Sable (Awsahble) - "Black" a lake in Alger County.
Au Train (Au Train) - "The Train" - referring to the dog sled train of the Indians and trappers. Village and lake in Alger County.
Bale de Wassai - (Bay de Wass'e) - "Bullhead Bay" An arm of St. Mary's River on the Sugar Island Shore below Sault Ste. Marie
Some of these places are now ghost towns or have been transformed into attractions, All of them contributed to the exploration and development of Michigan!
