The Cardiff Giant

In1869, workers in Cardiff, New York, unearthed what appeared to be the body of an ancient 10-foot-tall petrified man. As word of the discovery spread, people flocked to catch a glimpse of the so-called “Cardiff Giant,” and many hailed it as one of the most significant archeological discoveries of the 19th century.

The giant was over 10 feet tall and, in an apparent petrified state, weighed more than 3,000 pounds. It even caught the attention of P.T. Barnum who tried to buy it for his museum. The farmer refused and old P.T. had a replica created and took it on tour.

The giant was eventually exposed as an elaborate fraud.
