Feodor Protar, a scholar, actor and publisher from Estonia emigrated to America and then came to Beaver Island in 1893.  At that time there was no doctor on the island. Protar who was not a physician took on the role of healer, caring for patients and dispensing medicine until his death in 1925.

His home and tomb are a few miles outside of town on Sloptown Rd.  Due to his humanitarian work and selfless attention to the less fortunate, he became a beloved figure.  He was known for his generosity in that he never required payment for his services from those who were impoverished and he never discriminated.  His cedar log home has been preserved and is open to visitors a few times each year.
