Bois Blanc Island

Bois Blanc Island SunriseBois Blanc Island (usually pronounced "Bob-Lo") is located in the Straits of Mackinac, top of the "hand" that is Michigan. One reaches the Island by ferry from Cheboygan, a few miles southeast of Mackinac City. From the Island's west end one can see the Mackinac Bridge and Mackinac Island, and from the north shore one can barely see the Upper Peninsula. The largest settlement on the Island is Pointe aux Pins; other cottages are scattered among the trees. There are several inland lakes. Amenities are few, but include a general store, two chapels, the Hoover Community Building, a post office, a tavern, an airport, and a one-room Pines School.

The island is about 12 miles (19 km) long, 6 miles (9.6 km) wide in Lake Huron southeast of Mackinac Island and almost due north of the city of Cheboygan. The community of Pointe Aux Pins is on the south side and has ferry service to Cheboygan. Some winters a safe path over the ice is marked by discarded Christmas trees allowing islanders to drive over to the mainland.
Bois Blanc Island in Winter

Bois Blanc beckons if you seek beauty and peacefulness, walks through forests, down Island paths, or driving over one track trails. Let the season dictate your mode of travel, cross-country skis, snowshoes, bicycle or shanks mare. The only sign of civilization may be an occasional vehicle or snowmobile moving along our twenty-five mile an hour country road. Instead of paved roads Bois Blanc promises unspoiled, undiscovered wilderness and spectacular views of swan, ducks, geese, loons, and eagles against a backdrop of unbelievable sunsets.

Bois Blanc Lighthouse

Located on the north end of Bois Blanc Island, to mark a shoal that juts out into northern Lake Huron, the Bois Blanc Island lighthouse is a two-story, light-brick, dwelling with an attached square 38-foot tower jutting out from the front. Built in 1867, it is the third lighthouse on this location.

Most folks don't realize how much they need "nothing to do". But if you require activities there is charter fishing, sailing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, bird watching, photography, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and within ninety minutes of Bois Blanc you'll find casinos, golf courses, down-hill skiing, and dozens of other Michigan attractions.
