drive the historic sauk trail

the towers in the Irish HillsThe towers in this photo are still there. At one time they were a popular day trip destination for travelers out of Detroit. You could climb to the top and view the spectacular Irish Hills.  They are closed to the public

History is everywhere along the trail. The flags of four nations have flown over Niles. Grosvenor Museum in Jonesville celebrates Christmas the old way. Walker Tavern served as a stagecoach stop then and serves as a visitor center today.

This road served as an Indian Trail, Stagecoach Route and Automotive Highway. When you take this drive be certain to visit McCourtie Park. The park is near Somerset and is one of the true hidden treasures in the Irish Hills of Michigan.
